First I read and re-read the novel by Thomas Hardy many times. I was in my twenties then and I loved it.
I must say, I still enjoy XIXth century English novels by writers such as George Elliot, Jane Austen , The Brontë sisters, Thomas Hardy, Charles Dickens … the great age of English literature as far as I am concerned ( Elizabethan Shakespeare apart 😉 )
Today, weather permitting ( rainy and gloomy) , I am treating myself with the adaptation of the novel Roman Polanski directed in 1979. If my memory is not failing, its natural setting was filmed in a Breton village called Locronan
